The rejected £70m Tottenham bid for Marc Guehi

During the final hours of the winter transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur were desperate for reinforcements in their defensive line.

As a result, the North London club made an audacious attempt to secure Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi on deadline day. The bid, reportedly around £70million, surprised many.

It was a last-minute attempt to bring the 24-year-old centre-back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, Crystal Palace swiftly rejected the offer, citing the lateness of the bid and the inability to find a suitable replacement in such a short period.

Failure to land Marc Guehi in the winter window has come with some consequences that could haunt Tottenham in the near future.

Liverpool and Arsenal eye summer move for Guehi

According to a report by Football Insider, Liverpool and Arsenal are now among the clubs who may enter the race once the summer window opens.

This comes after Tottenham’s failed late-window bid for Marc Guehi. Sources have revealed that the England international is attracting interest from several top Premier League clubs, with Newcastle United also planning to reignite their pursuit after failing to sign him last summer.

Chelsea are another club reportedly monitoring Guehi’s situation closely. Football Insider claims that the Blues explored the possibility of bringing Guehi back to Stamford Bridge during the mid-season transfer window.

With Guehi’s contract running until June 2026, there is a belief that his price tag could drop in the summer, making him an even more attractive option for interested clubs.

Palace, for their part, remain determined not to let their captain’s contract enter its final 12 months without securing a substantial transfer fee.

What Tottenham may regret not pushing for Guehi earlier

If you are Tottenham Hotspur, there is every reason to feel that this was an opportunity missed. The decision to wait until the final day of the window to make a move for Marc Guehi seems questionable in hindsight.

Had Spurs acted earlier, they might have secured the England international without the current threat of a bidding war in the summer.

Guehi’s value and profile will only grow as more clubs join the race, and Tottenham may now find themselves battling some of the biggest names in the Premier League for his signature.

It is a classic case of what could have been – a defender who might have transformed Tottenham’s defence is now at risk of slipping away.

The South London club are aware that failing to cash in at the right time could be costly, especially with multiple clubs circling.

Losing Guehi on a free transfer is not an option for a club like Crystal Palace, who rely on maximising profits from player sales to reinvest in the squad.
