Troy Deeney names one player who has lost his edge since joining Tottenham
The criticism continues to pour in for Tottenham Hotspur this season, and former Watford striker Troy Deeney has added his voice to the debate, offering a damning assessment of Richarlison’s decline at Tottenham.
The struggles at Tottenham Hotspur
This season has been nothing short of a nightmare for Tottenham Hotspur. The North London club, known for its free-flowing football in recent years, has endured a torrid campaign, with poor performances across the board and constant scrutiny from fans and pundits alike.
While the club’s chairman Daniel Levy has been the target of considerable criticism, manager Ange Postecoglou has also faced his fair share of questions.
The players, too, have not been spared, with even captain Heung-min Son being on the receiving end of some harsh assessments. It is hard to argue with the critics. Tottenham’s current position speaks volumes about their struggles.
After 24 games, the Lilywhites sit in 14th place in the Premier League table with just 27 points, a massive 16 points adrift of the top four. The more worrying fact is that they are only 10 points above the relegation zone.
Deeney’s verdict: Richarlison has lost his fire at Tottenham
Among the many struggling stars at Tottenham, Richarlison’s dip in form has been particularly striking.
Having joined Spurs for £60m, the Brazilian was expected to bring grit, determination, and goals to the team, but according to Troy Deeney, something is missing from Richarlison’s game.
Richarlison and Deeney were teammates at Watford, and Deeney remembers him as a fierce competitor with an edge that made him a nightmare for opposition defenders. However, that fire seems to have disappeared since his move to North London.
Troy Deeney said on the Premier League All Access Podcast: “I look at Richarlison. That’s not the Richarlison I used to play with. He’s lost a fire, he’s lost an edge, he’s lost a desire to go run through somebody.
“I think, I do not know what that environment is, and we hear the word culture all the time being branded around, it is a bit of a buzzword, but something at Spurs is too nice.
“Whether it is the facilities, whether it is the actual fact that they are not used to winning or expected to win anything, but people go there and they just lose a level of that spite and nastiness that probably what Spurs brought them in for.”
It is a harsh but honest assessment from someone who knows Richarlison well, and it reflects a growing concern about the environment at Tottenham Hotspur.
Can Richarlison turn it around at Tottenham?
Troy Deeney’s criticism is valid. However, it is also important to consider the circumstances surrounding the Brazilian’s struggles.
Injuries have plagued Richarlison’s time at Spurs, making it difficult for him to build any sort of rhythm. This season alone, the forward has missed 24 games due to various injuries.
It is tough for any player to deliver consistent performances with such a disrupted campaign, and Richarlison’s case is no different.
The hope for Tottenham and their fans is that the Brazilian forward can stay fit for a sustained period, rediscover his best form, and remind everyone why the club invested so heavily in him.
There is no doubt about his talent and fighting spirit, but it will take time and patience for him to get back to his best.
