Tottenham will barely win any prize money for winning Carabao Cup

0 2

Daniel Levy might be disappointed to learn that Tottenham Hotspur would only receive a tiny prize money should they manage to end their 17-year-old trophy drought by lifting the Carabao Cup this season.

Tottenham eyeing their first Wembley final in four years

The last time Spurs were in a cup final was back in 2021 when Jose Mourinho was unceremoniously sacked just before the Carabao Cup final against Man City, which Tottenham lost 1-0.

Ange Postecoglou, who had confidently asserted earlier this season that he always wins trophies in his second season at clubs, now has an opportunity to steer Spurs back into the famous stadium and walk the talk.

However, standing in his way are league leaders Liverpool, with Tottenham carrying just a slender 1-0 lead into the second leg at Anfield.

The prize money Spurs will get if they win the Carabao Cup

Lifting the trophy on 16 March at Wembley will mean a lot to everyone associated with Tottenham, with nearly a generation of fans having never seen the club win silverware.

However, it might not mean much at all to the club’s bottom line. This is because BBC Sport have now revealed that the winners of the competition will get just £100,000 while the runners-up will only get £50,000. Each semi-finalist gets £25,000.

Tottenham would also be owed 45 per cent of the match proceeds from the Wembley final, but these are not figures that would make a dent in the club’s balance sheet.

In fact, the prize money would not even be enough to pay a single week of wages for Heung-min Son, James Maddison, Cristian Romero, Timo Werner or Dejan Kulusevski, who are all on contracts worth more than £100,000 per week.

Spurs will enjoy commercial benefits if they lift a trophy

Cynics will say that the low monetary reward one gets from success in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup is one of the reasons the Tottenham hierarchy have not put much importance on those competitions, with Levy historically prioritising Champions League qualification over winning cups.

However, there is no doubt that everyone at Spurs will be desperate to see the club go all the way and lift a trophy for once, with the Lilywhites desperately needing to get that monkey off their back.

A trophy will completely galvanize everyone at Hotspur Way and will come as the much-needed boost that the current project under Postecoglou needs. It will also benefit Tottenham commercially as they look to grow their brand around the world.
