What Major 2025 NFL Draft Report Means For Patriots At No. 4

The Patriots are in an advantageous spot in the 2025 NFL Draft, but they will need to wait and see how a few cards fall before they decide what to do with their pick.

Well, New England might now have a good read on one of those selections, which will help dictate how the rest of the first round transpires.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Saturday shared a series of notes coming out of the Senior Bowl, where many of the nation’s top NFL prospects congregated for a star-studded affair. One of those nuggets was about quarterback Cam Ward, who “scouts and executives” believe will “likely be the No. 1 pick,” per Thamel.

Ward landing with the Tennessee Titans could be good or bad news for the Patriots, depending on how you want New England to utilize the fourth overall pick.

If you want Mike Vrabel and company to take the best player available with their top selection, Thamel’s report was very encouraging. Ward punching a ticket to Nashville would mean the Patriots have a better chance of landing one of the best non-quarterback prospects in the class, such as dual-threat phenom Travis Hunter or standout pass-rusher Abdul Carter.

However, if you want New England to trade its first pick in order to stockpile assets, Thamel’s report was not promising. Such a scenario likely would require Ward or Shedeur Sanders — the two best signal-callers in the class — to slide to No. 4, where a desperate QB-needy team like the Las Vegas Raiders could be motivated to move up. So, Ward going off the board at No. 1 overall seemingly would diminish the chances of that scenario coming to fruition, as the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants likely both would be in play to take Sanders at No. 2 or No. 3, respectively.

One way or another, the Patriots will make a franchise-altering decision after they go on the clock April 24. But again, the slate of opportunities will be determined by how the first three picks shake out.
