Manager issues apology to Ange Postecoglou after ‘stupid comment’
Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult season has been compounded by an off-the-cuff remark from Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens, who has now issued an apology to Ange Postecoglou after making what he has described as a “stupid comment.”
Leyton Orient and Spurs have a healthy relationship
Ange Postecoglou’s second season in charge of Tottenham Hotspur has not gone as smoothly as many had hoped, with his side currently in the bottom half of the Premier League table and dealing with an injury crisis that has severely weakened their squad.
The situation has left the Tottenham boss facing mounting scrutiny, with some questioning whether his philosophy is sustainable in the Premier League’s unforgiving environment.
Leyton Orient’s Richie Wellens found himself in the spotlight, following his side’s 1-0 home defeat, Wellens was asked whether injuries had played a role in their loss, to which he responded: “I am not Ange Postecoglou, keep using it as an excuse.”
Richie Wellens apologises for “stupid comment” on Ange Postecoglou
After realising the impact of his words, Richie Wellens moved quickly to set the record straight, issuing a formal apology to Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur.
In a statement addressing the controversy, he admitted regret over his choice of words and acknowledged Tottenham’s status as a club with whom Leyton Orient shares a strong relationship.
He stated as relayed on the official Leyton Orient website: “After today’s game, I was asked about the injuries within our squad and, without thinking, I made a stupid comment about Tottenham Hotspur.
“That comment was brought to my attention later in the evening and having watched my interview back I am deeply embarrassed and regret what I said.
“At Leyton Orient, we have a strong relationship with Tottenham Hotspur and it was never my intention to say anything that would jeopardise that. Their manager, Ange Postecoglou, is a world-class coach and I want to apologise for my comments and wish Spurs all the very best for the second half of the season.”
Wellens’ swift response appears to have been an attempt to limit any potential damage to the relationship between the two clubs, with Tottenham and Orient having long-standing ties that have benefited both sides, particularly in terms of player development.
Tottenham and Leyton Orient’s strong connection remains intact
Despite the controversy surrounding Wellens’ comments, the connection between Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient remains strong, particularly in terms of player loans.
Goalkeeper Josh Keeley and forward Jamie Donley are currently thriving on loan at Brisbane Road. Donley, in particular, has been a standout performer, contributing five goals and six assists so far.
The 20-year-old forward has flourished with regular minutes in League One, showing the kind of quality that has made him one of Tottenham’s most highly rated academy graduates
