Tottenham may risk losing out to West Ham in race for midfielder

0 2

An interesting update has emerged regarding the future of Angel Gomes, suggesting that West Ham United might be better placed than Tottenham Hotspur to land the Lille star.

Race for Angel Gomes is now heating up

Gomes‘ current contract at Lille runs out at the end of the season, with the midfielder looking on course to leave the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer.

It is not often that clubs get an opportunity to sign a player of the 24-year-old’s class and potential for free, which is why a number of Premier League sides are seemingly queueing up to sign the England international.

Reports over recent days have suggested that Tottenham may have the upper hand over other suitors, including Man United and West Ham, as the midfielder prefers to link up with the Lilywhites.

Have West Ham moved ahead of Tottenham in race?

A report from L’Equipe has now suggested that the Hammers are extremely keen to land Gomes and ‘hope to secure’ a pre-contract agreement, which the midfielder is allowed to sign with non-French clubs.

Tottenham are also credited with an interest in the Man Utd academy graduate, but interestingly, it is explained that Postecoglou‘s men want to sign the player before the February 3 deadline.

However, Lille have no interest in sanctioning such a deal, with the Ligue 1 club deciding not to allow any of their key players to leave mid-season.

As a result, it is postulated that Graham Potter’s men may be better placed to complete a summer deal for Gomes than Tottenham are.

Will Tottenham put in a late cheeky offer for Gomes?

It will be interesting to see if Spurs put in a cheeky late offer for Gomes to try and tempt Lille into a sale.

However, one would assume that the midfielder would prefer to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season as that would land him a better contract at his next club.

Even if Tottenham are unsuccessful in signing Gomes this window (which appears likely), one would expect the club to start working on a summer deal for the Englishman.
