Tottenham open ‘direct negotiations’ to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly locked in talks with Bayern Munich this very second over a deal to sign winger Mathys Tel, but a curious update has now emerged which contradicts what we have heard over the last 24 hours about Spurs’ pursuit of the teenager.
Johan Lange in Germany to push through Mathys Tel deal
It has been widely reported that Tottenham’s technical director Johan Lange was at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday to watch the Frenchman in the Champions League clash against Slovan Bratislava.
According to various outlets, the Dane is looking to wrap up a permanent deal for the teenager before the window slams shut on Monday.
It has been suggested by some sources that Tottenham would have to pay around €50m-€60m (£41.8m-£50.1m) to sign Tel permanently.
Update on Tottenham talks for Mathys Tel
Florian Plettenberg has now told Sky Sports News that Tottenham have now opened ‘direct talks’ with Bayern over a deal for Tel.
The journalist says that Ange Postecoglou‘s men are ‘pushing’ hard to sign the teenager, but Chelsea, Aston Villa and Marseille are still in the picture.
However, interestingly, Lyall Thomas, has now remarked that Spurs are actually working on a loan deal for Tel, rather than a permanent move, which contradicts many of the reports we have seen over the last 36 hours.
Are Spurs simply using the loan formula to defer payment?
It could simply be a case of Tottenham wanting to sign Tel on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy in the summer.
We saw reports suggest a few days ago that Spurs were looking to agree on an initial loan deal with Southampton for Tyler Dibling, in order to defer the payment of the £50m wanted by Saints until the summer.
The Lilywhites might be doing the same with the Bayern man as they envisage they could be in a healthier financial position in the future, possibly due to some investment coming into the club.
