Ex-Celtics Fan Favorite Under Investigation For Illegal Betting Probe

A former Boston Celtics fan favorite allegedly is involved in an illegal gambling ring.

Terry Rozier is under federal investigation for manipulating his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme, according to the Wall Street Journal. Federal authorities investigated a March 23, 2023 game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans.

Rozier started and only played nine minutes for Charlotte. The veteran guard left the game due to “right foot discomfort” after scoring five points and recording four rebounds and two assists. Rozier didn’t return and missed the Hornets’ last eight games of the season.

The Miami Heat guard was not accused of wrongdoing. However, the gambling ring was accused of conspiring with former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter, who is banned by the NBA and pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

A statement from the league was released following the report of a federal investigation on Rozier.

The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules,” the statement read, per Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel. “We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation.”

Miami’s next game is Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs.
