NFL Should Pick Different Trophy For Bill Belichick’s Tom Brady Idea

Tom Brady is as synonymous with the Super Bowl as any player in NFL history.

His seven total championships between the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are an NFL record. He took home Super Bowl MVP honors in five of those seven games, also a record. The future Hall of Famer transcended the biggest game in the world and became a familiar face with 10 total appearances.

Bill Belichick won six titles with Brady for the Patriots and made the monumental plea recently for the NFL to rename the Vince Lombardi trophy, handed out to the winning team of the Super Bowl, in Brady’s honor.

That’s a respectable idea given Brady’s impact on the annual event. He shouldn’t take over the name of that trophy, however.

Lombardi set the tone for the Super Bowl when he won the first two ever as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. His impact on football and the Super Bowl itself should allow his name to stay on the trophy.

But why not name the MVP award, which Brady has won more than anyone, after the legendary quarterback?

Just to be clear, that’s no shot or intended disrespect to the current namesake in former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, who led the merger and brought the Super Bowl to life. For that reason, his legacy should still be honored around the game in another fashion and maybe in more significant fashion. What that adjustment is should be up for debate.

Brady is a surefire bet for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and already entered the Patriots Hall of Fame last summer. The naming of the MVP trophy in Brady’s honor should be pursued.

As long as the league still properly honors the man who started the Super Bowl in the first place.
