Tottenham’s injury crisis takes a turn

Earlier this week, it was revealed that James Maddison picked up a knock in Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League clash against Hoffenheim, which led to the midfielder being absent in the Premier League clash against Leicester City.

His absence added to a growing list of injuries within the Spurs camp, with key players such as Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero, Brennan Johnson, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner, and Guglielmo Vicario already sidelined.

Fortunately, Vicario, Van de Ven, Bissouma, and Richarlison were all spotted in training on Wednesday ahead of the Europa League match against IF Elfsborg.

However, the Maddison setback was particularly frustrating given his standout performance against Hoffenheim in the Europa League just days earlier. The former Leicester City star not only scored but also played a pivotal role in Spurs’ 3-2 victory.

However, news of Maddison’s condition broke on Monday after the club conducted an assessment, confirming that the midfielder would be sidelined for two to three weeks.

How James Maddison’s injury will affect Tottenham

This latest setback could not have come at a worse time for Tottenham, as it will greatly affect the tactical flexibility afforded to manager Ange Postecoglou. With this setback, Spurs are set to lose a lot of creativity in the middle of the park.

The situation is exacerbated by Brennan Johnson’s ongoing injury, which forces Dejan Kulusevski, who is normally effective in the midfield’s creative role, to shift to the right wing—a position Spurs currently lack adequate cover for.

This leaves the midfield without flair and vision, as the remaining options predominantly consist of players with a more industrious, box-to-box profile. With crucial cup games on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how Ange Postecoglou adapts his tactics.
