Tottenham rejected chance to sign Ange Postecoglou’s former striker

0 9

Tottenham Hotspur have been keen on signing a new striker, however, they decided against making a bid for a player who has had previous success under Ange Postecoglou.

Who is Kyogo Furuhashi – Ange Postecoglou’s former star striker?

Kyogo is a former teammate of Barcelona legend, Andres Iniesta, and was Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice striker at Celtic. The forward was one of a number of Japanese players former Yokohama F. Marinos manager, Postecoglou, brought to Glasgow.

During Postecoglou’s time as Celtic manager, Kyogo played a key role as his side lifted five domestic trophies in two seasons. He scored 54 goals in 83 appearances and always looked a threat with his runs in behind the opposition defence.

Kyogo managed to keep his spot as Celtic’s main striker ahead of Giorgos Giakoumakis, who now plays in Mexico, and later Oh-Hyeon-gyu, who joined Genk last summer.

The 30-year-old has scored fewer goals under current Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers, than he did under Postecoglou. However, he has managed to remain a regular starter ahead of Republic of Ireland international, Adam Idah, who is Celtic’s second most expensive signing ever.

Tottenham rejected the chance to sign Kyogo Furuhashi

With Dominic Solanke injured, Spurs are interested in adding a striker to their squad. However, according to TBR Football, the Lilywhites rejected the chance to sign Kyogo.

Instead, Kyogo joined Rennes for £10m, while Jota, who had previously been linked with a move to Spurs, swapped Rennes for a return to Celtic.

Tottenham’s primary transfer target was Randal Kolo Muani, but he chose to join Juventus. They are, however, considering a move for Hamza Igamane, the Rangers striker who scored against Spurs in the Europa League.

Have Spurs made the correct decision not to sign Kyogo?

Anyone who has seen Kyogo in action knows he is a talented player. However, he is now 30 years old and his finishing in the last couple of seasons has been a cause for concern.

Since Postecoglou left Celtic, Kyogo has missed 41 big chances in the Scottish Premiership alone, while he has scored 24 goals (Sofascore).

Spurs need a player who will be clinical in front of goal and who is able to offer the club their primary years. They will have to act quickly though, as the January transfer window nears its end.
