Tottenham Hotspur’s poor form analysed

As the Premier League crosses into the second half of the 2024/25 season, it is typically a time when clubs reassess their ambitions and recalibrate their expectations.

For those sitting atop the table, it is about maintaining momentum; for those battling relegation, it is a fight for survival.

And then there are clubs like Tottenham Hotspur – stuck in a limbo that appears increasingly difficult to escape.

Before the season began, optimism surrounded Spurs with fans hopeful for a campaign of progress under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou.

However, as it stands, Tottenham find themselves languishing in 15th place, only eight points clear of the relegation zone and a whopping 17 points adrift of the Champions League spots.

To make matters worse, the club has failed to secure a single league victory in their last nine outings, a damning run that has erased any lingering hopes of salvaging the league season.

This poor form is not without consequences, as the club risks losing over £30 million in prize money – a hefty financial blow that adds to the growing frustrations of a vocal section of the fanbase.

Despite these challenges, Postecoglou remains in charge, a curious decision when juxtaposed against the managerial changes seen elsewhere.

Everton, West Ham United, Leicester City, Southampton, and Manchester United have all pulled the trigger on underperforming bosses, yet Daniel Levy seems content to delay the inevitable.

Why has Daniel Levy not sacked manager Ange Postecoglou?

The first and most obvious reason for Postecoglou’s survival is the sympathy emanating from the Tottenham boardroom, particularly in light of the injury crisis that has ravaged the squad.

Sources close to the club reveal that there is an understanding among the ownership that the 59-year-old manager has had to contend with unprecedented challenges, limiting his ability to field a competitive team.

In fact, the word from within is that Tottenham are planning to “back the manager” during this winter transfer window to help turn things around.

However, this supposed backing has yet to materialise, and instead, it appears as though the club are adopting a wait-and-see approach, banking on injured players returning rather than committing significant resources to a manager whose long-term future remains in doubt.

Another factor complicating any decision to part ways with Postecoglou is the financial implication of doing so. Reports suggest that Tottenham would have to pay a compensation fee of £12 million to terminate his contract prematurely – a significant figure that likely gives Levy pause for thought.

The club’s progression in cup competitions is another thread of optimism keeping Postecoglou in place. Despite their league woes, Tottenham have advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao cup, with just one more victory separating them from a final appearance.

Yet, their opponents in the semi-final are Liverpool, a side in imperious form, which raises further doubts about Tottenham’s chances.

Levy, who sacked José Mourinho days before a cup final in 2021 and faced immense backlash for doing so, may be keen to avoid repeating that mistake by giving Postecoglou the chance to see this campaign through – or at least as far as the cup allows.

Nonetheless, with results continuing to spiral and frustration among fans mounting, one cannot help but wonder how much longer this leniency will last, particularly if Tottenham fail to win any more games before their semi-final clash.

What do Tottenham stand to gain by sacking Ange Postecoglou?

Should Ange Postecoglou be sacked tomorrow, what could possibly change at the club? Well, depending on the new manager, there could be an uptick in results.

While Ange Postecoglou is a brilliant manager, and injuries to key members of his squad have affected his team’s performance, there are just some games he should still be winning regardless.

The games against Everton and Leicester City are good examples of games that Tottenham should have won.

Then you go back to even when he had a fully fit squad, there were still inconsistencies in results, I mean losing to an out-of-form Crystal Palace and other similar games, really just makes you believe that a new manager could improve results.

However, we cannot say for sure how quickly such a change will occur. If you look at all of the newly appointed managers in the League at the moment, only perhaps David Moyes has improved the results of his side – as for the other managerial appointments they have failed to yield immediate results.

The Premier League is competitive and if Tottenham are to be successful, then everything from the footballing part of the business has to be the best. the medical department, the recruitment and the quality of transfers made have to be much better.

A new manager will not bring back the injured players, a new manager will simply not make the owners spend if they do not want to and a new manager will also need time.

He will demand his own set of players, it will be starting a new project all over again and if the right structure is not around him, then come the next 18 months we will be asking the same question: “What do Tottenham stand to gain by sacking the next Ange Postecoglou?”
