The one silver lining for Tottenham amidst their injuries

Tottenham have been absolutely decimated by injuries and suspensions throughout the season, with their absentee list regularly hitting double-digits. They have also had to make do without the spine of the side for a sustained period this season.

That is one of the reasons why Spurs are mired down in 15th place in the table after 22 Premier League games, something that was completely unconscionable at the start of the season.

The one silver lining to this mess is the fact that many of the club’s talented youngsters have had opportunities to showcase their skills, and the likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Mikey Moore have grabbed them with both hands.

Gray, in particular, has surprised everyone with the way he has adapted to the centre-back role, a position he has never played before this season.

When asked about the Leeds academy graduate, Porro told Football.London: “Oh Archie Gray, he’s unreal! He’s a good guy and he’s playing centre-back or as a number six, he’s top!”

Porro also pointed out that this experience of being thrown into the deep end at 18 years of age will do wonders for the growth of the likes of Gray and Bergvall.

The right-back continued: “When you have injuries and you have signed young players who perhaps are for the future, then you sign them for the future but also so you’ve got options if you get injuries.

“Lucas, Archie and others have been doing so well, but that, at the end of the day, is why the club have brought them in. They’ve had their opportunity and it’s up to them to take it.

“They’re doing a spectacular job for the club and if we go through a bad moment and they’re suffering like us all at this moment, then that’ll make them great players in the future because they’re putting everything out there for the team.”

Porro is not surprised by Djed Spence’s rise

Another young player who has outperformed expectations is a man who is now fighting Porro for a place in the starting eleven, Djed Spence.

The Englishman has impressed in both full-back roles, finally doing justice to the talent he possesses, and Porro admits that he always knew the former Middlesbrough man had this in him.

When asked what he thinks about Spence’s rise, the 25-year-old said: “The same with Archie and Lucas, he is doing a spectacular job for us at the moment, not just now but before I’ve always looked at him as being a real talent. It’s not just because he plays in my position, you can just see from the way he is, the man he is.

“When he was out away from the club, he kept working hard, kept his ideas clear, just so that when he had that opportunity he would be prepared for it. I just say to him now to keep going as you are and you will keep being important for the team.”
