MLB Rumors: Red Sox Target Remains ‘Top Priority’ For AL Central Team

The Boston Red Sox are still in the hunt for Alex Bregman, and it looks like only one other team stands in their way.

Bregman is seeking a long-term deal, according to his agent Scott Boras. His options seemed to dwindle after the Houston Astros and New York Yankees locked up their infield options.

The Detriot Tigers are still in the running, and they reportedly are “all in” on the two-time World Series champion. What’s getting in their way is that A. J. Hinch’s side wants to sign a “high-leverage reliever to rack up saves” while also pursuing Bregman, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press on Thursday. However, the All-Star is still their “top priority.”

That focus prevented Detroit from signing high-end relievers like Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates, who each signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. But they seem to be willing to wait out the Bregman market even if that means missing out on one of the top relievers left in the market.

Boston hasn’t formally submitted an offer to Bregman, but multiple MLB insiders still believe the Red Sox have the best chance at landing the 30-year-old before the start of spring training.
