A torrid time to be a Spurs supporter… and Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham have finished as low as 15th before in the Premier League, but you have to go all the way back to 1993/94. Since they finished fifth in 2006 under Martin Jol’s management, Spurs have consistently competed for the European spots, with the exception of the occasional season.

This year, however, Spurs look as though they could match their worst-ever season in the competition. Currently, the Lilywhites are 15th in the Premier League table and their recent form does not provide much hope that they will turn things around.

These days, the manager is often held responsible for the failings of a team. Postecoglou is no exception to this and some fans have called on Spurs to sack their manager.

Ange Postecoglou receives the backing of Les Ferdinand

Les Ferdinand has now questioned whether Tottenham should be doing better with their available resources. The former Spurs striker has asked whether they should be struggling so much without a few players, however,r he does not believe removing Postecoglou would be helpful to the club.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Ferdinand said: “I’m a fan of the way Ange plays. With his best XI out there, I like it.

“They’ve been unfortunate with injuries. Take the best defenders out of any team and they will struggle. But should Tottenham be a team that struggles with a few players out? That’s what they need to address.

“You sometimes need time, and we are in an era where there’s pressure to get rid of people if it’s not going right straight away. One thing Tottenham need is that stability. Keep changing the manager every 18 months and there’s no stability.

“They need to stick their colours to the mast and go on a journey. Everything aligned, stick to the direction. Not keep chopping and changing.”

How have Spurs fared when sacking previous managers?

Spurs have sacked a gluttony of managers over the years and they often benefit from such decisions in the short-term.

Every time a new manager has been brought in since Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs have started playing well, which has been reflected in Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte and Postecoglou all winning the Premier League Manager of the Month award in August.

However, the end result each time has been missing out on a Champions League spot and failing to win a trophy. With Spurs currently in the Carabao Cup semi-final, Ferdinand may be right to suggest that Spurs need to stop ‘chopping and changing’.
