Tottenham have struggled with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven injuries

Tottenham began the season with four recognised centre-backs who have made first-team appearances. However, there were already concerns about a lack of quality on the bench.

Ben Davies has never been a regular starter during his decade at the club, while Radu Dragusin has not looked comfortable in the heart of Tottenham’s defence.

To make things worse, Spurs have been without Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for much of the season while Ben Davies has also been kept out through injury.

This has caused Archie Gray to play away from his natural position. Although the 18-year-old has largely been praised for his performances in all fairness.

While Luka Vušković will arrive in the summer, Tottenham are interested in signing another centre-back. This could be escalated by the fact that Cristian Romero’s future remains uncertain, although Spurs will be hopeful the Argentine puts pen to paper to sign a new deal, with his current contract ending in 2027.

Spurs are interested in signing Alessandro Bastoni

According to Fichajes, Tottenham are interested in signing Inter defender, Alessandro Bastoni. Spurs have previously attempted to sign Bastoni, with former sporting director, Fabio Partici, keen on the Italian international, but they have been unsuccessful.

A deal for Bastoni is most likely to be completed in the summer, but Spurs are aware that ‘competing with financially stronger clubs’ for a player of Bastoni’s calibre will be a ‘significant challenge’. Also, Bastoni’s contract does not expire until 2028, so Inter will have an advantage during negotiations and could name a hefty asking price.

Spurs are also interested in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and RC Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov. However, Branthwaite is unlikely to leave the Toffees in January, while Khusanov is heavily linked with Manchester City. Therefore, Bastoni is Tottenham’s primary centre-back target.

Tottenham transfer target Alessandro Bastoni has an impressive track record

Although he is only 25 years old, Bastoni has already lifted a number of trophies. He is a two-time Serie A and Coppa Italia winner with Inter and was part of Italy’s Euro 2020 winning squad.

Making more than 160 appearances for Inter, the left-sided central defender has become a crucial player in their defence. If Spurs are able to complete a deal in the summer, he will be a marquee signing.
