Ange Postecoglou says Richarlison is a great fit for his Spurs system
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has provided a glimpse into the ongoing efforts behind the scenes, particularly in managing Richarlison’s fitness as the Spurs forward returns from injury.
Tottenham’s season of injury struggles
While Tottenham Hotspur have impressed in spells under Ange Postecoglou, injuries have been a recurring theme of their season, forcing the squad into constant adjustments.
January is seen as a crucial month for the team’s recovery, not just in terms of league performance, but also in the reintegration of key players returning from the sidelines.
Among those stepping back into action is Richarlison, whose time in north London since his £60 million transfer from Everton has been plagued by persistent injuries.
The 27-year-old marked his return from his recent setback during Tottenham’s midweek clash against Arsenal, coming on as a substitute in a game that tested the mettle of Postecoglou’s side.
The forward is now expected to feature more prominently as Spurs travel to Goodison Park on Sunday to face his former club, Everton.
Ange Postecoglou is excited about Richarlison’s Spurs return
Speaking to football.london, Ange Postecoglou shed light on the measured strategy employed to ensure Richarlison’s return to action is both impactful and sustainable.
He said: “That’s a challenge. We’ve tried different ways, and Richy is trying different ways. We’ve been really careful in the way we’ve brought him back this time.
“He’s probably been ready to go for a couple of weeks. We’ve given him extra work. I thought he was really good when he came on the other night, you could see his quality.
“He is one of these guys that does lead by example, particularly when he plays. It’s great to have him back. With Richy, it’s about him gaining confidence in his body as well. We can do that in the next few weeks.
“He’ll certainly play a part in the Everton game. Hopefully get him some more minutes than the other night, because if we can keep him fit, I’ve got no doubt he’ll be a really important player for us.
“I’ve got no doubt about that. I know you mentioned the Everton game [the 2-2 draw when Richarlison scored twice last season], but when he played last year, that run of games, he was really good for us.
“I think he’s a really good fit for the way we play, in a couple of positions, centrally or out wide. If we can keep him fit between now and the end of the season, I’m sure he’s going to make an impact.”
The importance of managing Tottenham’s injury woes
In the broader context of Tottenham’s season, Ange Postecoglou’s management of Richarlison’s return exemplifies the club’s renewed focus on player fitness and medical oversight.
The Australian manager recently confirmed that changes are being implemented within the medical department, with a clear emphasis on addressing the recurring injuries that have hindered the squad throughout the campaign.
These proactive measures could prove pivotal as Tottenham approach the business end of the season, with depth and fitness becoming essential factors in their pursuit of success.
