UWI and Blackbirds football agree to 50/50 split of PM Cup winnings

0 3

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus and the UWI Blackbirds football team agreed to an equal split of the prize money from last year’s Prime Minister’s Cup.

Days after lifting the cup at Kensington Oval, dissatisfied players sounded the alarm that (UWI) offered a 50/50 split, but insisted on the full purse since the organisers bore the expenses.

They wrote to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Minister of Sport Charles Griffith and Cave Hill principal, Dr Clive Landis, asking for a speedy resolution.

According to a release from the campus today, the matter was resolved at a meeting on Monday between representatives of UWI and the team.

“Agreement was reached on the basis of an equal share of prize money between players and support staff of the UWI Blackbirds football team and the Academy of Sport at Cave Hill. The 50/50 share is based on the UWI Sports Club policy approved by University Finance and General Purposes Committee, which came into effect in 2023,” the release said.

“The Cave Hill Campus commends the UWI Blackbirds for their exceptional performance, which brought pride and recognition to the institution, and reaffirms our dedication to providing a supportive environment for student-athletes to thrive both on and off the field.” UWI Blackbirds came from behind to defeat Brittons Hill 3-2 and claim the $100 000 prize.  (PR/SAT)
