According to Ben Jacobs, there is a lot of optimism at Tottenham Hotspur about what Antonin Kinsky is capable of, with the decision-makers at the club not necessarily thinking of him as just a number two.

Antonin Kinsky’s dream Tottenham debut

Fairytale stories are increasingly rarer in modern-day football, but those in attendance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Wednesday did witness one unfolding in front of their eyes.

21-year-old Antonin Kinsky, who was playing in the Czech second-tier just 18 months ago, suddenly found himself thrust on the big stage in a big semifinal clash against the best side in Europe in front of over 60,000 supporters.

If the youngster was nervous, he certainly did not show it, demonstrating incredible confidence and composure, and helping his side emerge with a clean sheet and a much-needed win.

It was some way to announce himself to the Tottenham faithful and Kinsky was overcome with emotion after the full-time whistle, embracing his sister in the stands with tears in his eyes.

What Tottenham think of Antonin Kinsky

Journalist Ben Jacobs has now explained that Spurs have not signed Kinsky as a mere backup to Guglielmo Vicario.

He claims that there is a genuine belief at the club that he can challenge the Italian for the number one shirt, with everyone at Hotspur Way impressed by the newcomer’s personality and mentality.

Jacobs said on The Last Word on Spurs: “But no, Kinsky is at worst a number two and has really been brought in to challenge Vicario.

“All the other ones you mentioned are effectively down the pecking order. Austin was excellent, arguably the man of the match against Newcastle, but he was very much forced into that spotlight.

“What you will probably find once he settles is that with Vicario out, Kinsky gets some relatively imminent Premier League game time. So I expect him to be thrown straight into the deep end.

“To your point about his mentality, the feeling from Tottenham is he’s very strong-willed, he’s very vocal, he’s a good leader, he’ll fit in well in the dressing room.”

Vicario will relish competition from Kinsky

While Vicario has been excellent for Spurs since arriving from Empoli, his inability to deal with corners and free-kicks is a jarring weakness in his game.

The 28-year-old will now know that he has Kinsky breathing down his neck and that he could lose his spot in the team if he does not overcome his shortcomings.

The Tottenham number one is a natural competitor, and he would relish the challenge of batting the young Czech shot-stopper for a place in the side.
