Tottenham have tied down Heung-min Son for one more year

Earlier this week, Spurs activated the option to extend Son’s contract by one year, thus ensuring that the forward is tied to the club until 2026.

Reacting to the news, the Tottenham captain said that he is ‘really grateful’ to the club for the decision and that he is proud to continue his journey with the Lilywhites, having spent almost a decade at N17 already.

However, one big talking point among pundits of late has been Son’s form, with many suggesting that the forward looks a shadow of the player he was in previous years.

Ange Postecoglou defends Son’s form this season

Postecoglou has now reasoned that it is not fair to analyse the 32-year-old’s form without including the broader context of his side’s struggles this season.

The Australian suggested that Son would be scoring a lot more goals if he was playing for Liverpool right now and that Mohamed Salah would not be having a particularly big impact if he was part of the current Tottenham set-up.

When asked about the South Korean’s form, Postecoglou remarked (via The Guardian): “People need to have a little bit of context. Mo is a world-class player but if you put him in our team now I’m not sure he’ll have that same level of performance because of the situation we’re in as a group.

“You need a team that’s in good form, creating opportunities, playing on the front foot, having a really solid foundation of a defence that is cohesive. None of these things exist at the moment [at Spurs]. We’re relying on individual moments.

“Mo is an unbelievable player but he’s playing in a fantastic team that are flying. I’d hazard to say that if you put Sonny in Liverpool’s team, I reckon his goalscoring return would be decent.”

Postecoglou confident about Son turnaround

The Spurs head coach believes that we will see Son having a greater impact in the final third once Tottenham welcome their key players back and return to their best.

He added: “We are a team that is very disrupted, that is not playing with a fluency that it can play with. We’re asking players to play in positions that they are totally unfamiliar with.

“But when we’re at our best, I still think you’ll see Sonny’s return – in terms of his ability to score goals and be really effective for us. He’s going through a tough trot but we’re going through a tough trot. That goes hand in hand.”
