Weekend preview: Bassett host Bitton in Sunday showdown

0 16

Royal Wootton Bassett Town host Bitton in a crunch South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North clash on Sunday (Sustain Stadium, 2pm kick off). Pitting fourth against second, Bassett can go above Bitton should they win by two goals, while a one goal victory would see the teams level on points and goal difference. However, Bassett will be going into the match knowing that they'll need a much improved performance compared with the reverse fixture, which saw Bitton win 5-2. And they'll need to overcome a side who have lost just once in the league this season - with Bitton's sole defeat coming in their most recent competitive fixture against leaders Gloucester City. Admission on Sunday is £4 for adults, £2 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members. On Saturday the Men's First Team get to enjoy a break from league action when they visit Watlington Town in the Marsh Challenge Cup third round (2pm kick off). Bassett will be big favourites against the Hellenic League Division Two East side, who no doubt have their eyes on ruffling some feathers and causing an upset. The game will be the first competitive meeting between the teams since February 1999 when Bassett and Watlington were both in Hellenic League Division One. Of the four games the teams have played, Bassett have won three and drawn one. Also on Saturday the Development team look to build on last week's important victory when they travel to Bemerton Heath Harlequins Reserves in the Wiltshire League Premier Division (2pm kick off). Bassett's win over Calne Town Reserves took them above Bemerton in the table with Mark Simpkins' side hoping to preserve that lead. Bemerton were 1-0 winners in their earlier season league encounter, though Bassett did record a convincing 4-0 Wiltshire Senior Cup victory against their opponents.
