Patriots Pull Drake Maye, Insert Fellow Rookie Vs. Bills

FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots quarterback Drake Maye’s season is over.

New England made a notable change during Sunday’s matchup with the Buffalo Bills, as fellow rookie quarterback Joe Milton III was inserted into the lineup after one series. The Bills also made an early quarterback change as Josh Allen was removed after just one snap.

Milton was expected to play, as Sunday marked the only time he was made active on the season. Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed the team’s plans before the game in his weekly interview with 98.5’s Scott Zolak.

The Patriots’ decision to play the 24-year-old was more calculated than it probably looked on the surface, as they’ll not only be able to evaluate whether he could be a viable backup moving forward but his presence undoubtedly increases the chances they lose and secure the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Maye concludes the season with some pretty solid numbers. He completed 225-of-338 pass attempts for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns and threw 10 interceptions.

New England has to feel good about the youngster’s potential, and will feel even better if his fellow rookie can slop it up and ensure it enters the offseason with maximized assets.
