Tottenham break all-time Premier League record, but not one they want

Tottenham have at times led the league in positive key statistics this season. They have now set a Premier League record to which they won’t want to be attached.

Statistical league leaders

Despite being placed in the middle of the Premier League table, Tottenham have led the league on multiple occasions this season in key statistics.

Spurs remain the Premier League’s leading pressing team and sit in 2nd and 4th for most goals scored and best goal difference, consecutively.

Some of these underlying numbers give confidence that Spurs are progressing despite their less desirable results.

Tottenham set a record in going behind

According to Statmuse FC on X, Tottenham are the first team in Premier League history to go behind 1-0 in 15 home games within a calendar year.

The post does not contextualise the record with the fact that Spurs went on to win 8 of those fixtures.

Additionally, as the statistic is quantified by being across a calendar year, it includes fixtures across two seasons. This generalises the availability of different players and groups the habit of going behind as a consistent trend without any consideration for how or why the goals were conceded.

Ange Postecoglou’s teams concede goals

As long as Tottenham pursue an ideology led by Ange Postecoglou, they will concede goals. They do not shy away from risk and consequently, their opponents often find means of creating strong goal-scoring opportunities.

When the Spurs squad is not decimated by injury and fatigue, the rewards often outweigh the risks. Whether Spurs go behind or not is irrelevant as long as they get results.

The current form or squad situation should not be applied retrospectively to create a fictitious narrative as to why Spurs concede. Data and statistics can provide relevant insight into performances, but not when they are applied without context or reasoning.
