Tottenham among five ‘most interested’ clubs in 23-year-old midfielder

While it is well documented that Tottenham have a £25m option to sign Johnny Cardoso next summer, it has been suggested over recent days that the Lilywhites could decide to make a move for the Real Betis star in January rather than wait until the end of the season.

According to reports, Spurs have scouted the USA international extensively over recent weeks and have even opened talks with Betis over a January deal.

This is because Ange Postecoglou wants to bolster his midfield and believes that the 23-year-old will add more mobility and control to his side.

The same information has now been backed up by Diario de Sevilla, who say that Tottenham are ‘really interested’ in a January deal for Cardoso.

However, they are not the only ones eyeing a move for the midfielder, whose improved performances over recent months have brought him to the attention of several clubs.

The report says that AC Milan, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and one other unnamed club have joined Spurs in the race for Betis man.

While these clubs have shown the most interest in the player so far, it is made clear that none of them have stepped forward with offers so far.

Johnny Cardoso’s and Real Betis’ stance explained

The outlet points out that the player has a ‘real option’ of moving to Spurs in the summer and that is something he has to take into account while making a decision on his future.

The midfielder is said to be happy at the Benito Villamarin and wants to continue at the club for the time being, but the Spanish side may have other plans.

This is because Manuel Pellegrini’s side have to raise at least €20m (£16.6m) before June to balance their books and they could thus decide to accept any decent proposal that comes their way for Cardoso.
