Watching Hibs On Christmas Day
Christmas Day is synonymous with eating lots of food, spending time with the family, and playing games with friends or family members, it’s not necessarily about football.
But did you know Hibernian FC’s first-ever match took place against Heart of Midlothian on Christmas Day back in 1875?
That match was the first of 13 that have taken place on the Christmas Day!
We won four of those outings, the first was a 2-1 win over Third Lanark in 1886 thanks to goals from Jerry Reynolds and Phil Clarke.
One of the most iconic festive victories on this day was under the guidance of the Bob Shankly as the Hibees beat Aberdeen 3-1 away from home. The young Hibs team – that had the average age of just 23 – was dominant with goals from John McNamee, Jim Scott (above), and Peter Cormack sealing the victory.
Our last game on Christmas Day in involved the famous Turnbull Tornadoes, who played out an uncharacteristic 1-0 defeat to Rangers back in 1971.
