Spurs will hope historic dominance overcomes current form

If you asked both teams at the start of the season where they’d expect to be by Christmas, you would probably get the inverse of what has occurred.

Tottenham are going into Christmas in 11th in the Premier League table, whereas Nottingham Forest continue to push forward as top-four contenders.

Forest appear resolute in defence and capable of striking on the counter. Tottenham are still capable of blowing opponents away, but while they are still missing several senior players, they continue to show vulnerability against well-organised sides.

Nottingham Forest’s period away from the top flight means that they have not faced Tottenham many times in recent years. To reach 10 past fixtures, you need to go back to the 1998/99 season.

Tottenham have historically been the stronger side in this match-up and will hope that will remain the case with Forest currently being in superior form.

Wins: 8
Draw: 1
Losses: 1
Goals for: 20
Goals against: 6

The last two seasons have finished with identical results

Since Nottingham Forest returned to the Premier League in 2022, their league fixtures with Tottenham Hotspur have each ended the same way.

Both games that took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finished 3-1, while Spurs additionally won in their trips to The City Ground 2-0.

Three of the four Spurs goals scored in their trips to Nottingham were by the team’s centre forward (Harry Kane and then Richarlison). Tottenham will hope that Dominic Solanke can continue this trend and that it may be indicative of a home win later in the year.

Attack and defence have improved on last year

Tottenham managed to secure three points both home and away against Nottingham Forest last season in the Premier League, with five goals scored by Spurs in those games.

Forest are currently third for least xG conceded and they finished the 2023/24 season 5th in the same statistic. Their average goals per game conceded has also improved showing that while their defence was solid last season, it is now formidable.

Fortunately for Tottenham, their attacking potency has also developed. Their non-penalty xG per 90 has gone from 1.76 to 1.87. Spurs will still have to contend with injuries and absences, but if they can summon the requisite stamina, they could still come out of their Boxing Day match with 3 points.
