Tottenham start talks with Cristian Romero over potential new contract
Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly in talks with Cristian Romero’s camp regarding a potential new contract.
Cristian Romero’s Tottenham contract is running down
It is clear that Ange Postecoglou sees Cristian Romero as a crucial part of the project underway at Hotspur Way.
Not only is the Argentine key to the way Spurs defend and play out from the back, but he is also one of the leaders in the dressing room, being the vice-captain of the club.
With the former Juventus man’s current deal ending in 2027, the Lilywhites would thus be keen on tying him down to a new contract.
Spurs holding Romero contract talks
Over recent months, there has been plenty of speculation linking Romero with an exit from the club, with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich thought to be keeping an eye on his situation.
Some sources have suggested that the centre-back is hesitant to commit his future to Tottenham as he wants to be playing Champions League football next season.
However, ESPN’s James Olley has now provided a promising update, revealing that Spurs have started speaking to Romero’s camp about a new deal.
The journalists suggest that the North London side are mindful of the speculation over the former Juventus man’s future, which is why they have now begun talks.
Tottenham will have to convince Romero of their ambition
Tottenham will have to show some ambition in the January transfer window to convince Romero that they have serious ambitions of challenging the best sides in the Premier League.
The 26-year-old made it clear in an interview earlier this month that he felt that the club’s hierarchy had not invested enough into the first-team squad to make them competitive.
Romero said following Tottenham’s 4-3 loss to Chelsea: “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.
“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realise it. The last few years, it’s always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible.
“Hopefully, they realise who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”
