Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen is of the opinion that Ajax might have no choice but to sell one defender, who is wanted by Tottenham.

Versatile Ajax man on Tottenham’s radar

The player in question is Devyne Rensch, who although a right-back by trade, has played all across the backline for Ajax.

The 21-year-old, who is not too dissimilar to Archie Gray in his profile, is thought to be on the radars of both Tottenham and Liverpool.

It was reported a little over a week ago that Spurs were ‘hovering around’ the Dutchman while the Reds’ scouts had given positive reviews of him when they watched him this season.

Devyne Rensch backed to leave in January

The Ajax academy graduate’s current contract runs out next summer and Valentijn Driessen is of the opinion that the Eredivisie side’s efforts to tie the player down to a new deal are unlikely to prove fruitful.

He suggested that Ajax might thus have little choice but to sell the defender to the highest bidder in January.

When asked about Rensch‘s future, Driessen told De Telegraaf’s Kick-Off podcast (via TBR Football): “That’s very stupid. From a business perspective, it’s stupid to let a player who was with the Dutch national team walk out the door for free.

“Given his game and the form he has had over the past two years, it is completely understandable that you sit down with him [to discuss a new deal] very late. But, in business terms, you always have to secure a transfer fee.

“Ajax is in the process of making cutbacks, and perhaps this is part of that. You can sit down with someone ten times, but if you still can’t offer what someone wants, then there is no point.”

Rensch is a good fit for Spurs

Rensch’s age and his tactical profile make him a good fit for Ange Postecoglou‘s side. We know that the Spurs boss likes versatile options who can cover across the defensive line.

Some Spurs fans might be concerned that the 21-year-old is another project player rather than someone who would instantly improve the first-team squad.

However, the reality is that it is going to be next to impossible to improve on our starting defenders, with the club only in the market for defensive cover.
