Juan Soto Rumors: New Update On What Star Could Cost Red Sox

Reports coming out of the first round of Juan Soto meetings indicated the star outfielder’s free agency decision wouldn’t be all about money.

That said, it will take a lot of money to sign one of the world’s most talented players.

We reportedly have reached Phase 2 of the Soto sweepstakes. Five teams — including the Boston Red Sox — reportedly presented an offer to the four-time All-Star in the days leading up to Thanksgiving. While details of those offers haven’t surfaced, Soto’s reported desires provided an idea of what they might look like.

“Soto is believed to be seeking a 15-year deal worth more than $700 million,” NJ.com’s Randy Miller wrote in a column published Monday. “(Shohei) Ohtani’s contract was for 10 seasons with $680 million deferred. It’s believed that Soto isn’t interested in deferred money.”

The reported disinterest in deferred money is an important factor, as it might take the Los Angeles Dodgers out of the race. However, it could also work in favor of someone like New York Mets owner Steve Cohen, who has never hesitated to throw cash around to bolster his ballclub.

It remains to be seen if Soto’s wishes will be fulfilled down to the year and penny. But it’s safe to assume the 26-year-old will land one of the richest — if not the richest — deals in baseball history.
