Midweek preview: Reprieved Bassett seek Premier Shield shock

0 0

Royal Wootton Bassett Town will be looking to make the most of their second chance and pull off a major cup shock on Wednesday when they visit Chippenham Town in the quarter finals of the Wiltshire Premier Shield (7.45pm kick off). Bassett had fallen to a 4-2 defeat against Westbury United in the opening round. However, Sam Collier's side were reinstated into the competition after it emerged the Whitehorsemen had inadvertently fielded an ineligible player. That gives Bassett the rare opportunity to test themselves against National League South opponents - with a second successive semi final appearance the reward if they pull off a surprise. In recent years the Bluebirds have used the competition to test young blood from their Academy team. But, as shown by the fact they are the current holders after beating Bassett's semi final conquerors Swindon Supermarine in the 2023-24 final, the side Chippenham put out will still be strong and they will be favourites to advance. The prospect of pulling off an upset is something Bassett should relish though - and victory would see the club retain a presence in each of the Wiltshire Premier Shield, Senior Cup and Women's Cup.
