Tottenham eye Kubo signing amid creative struggles and poor league form
Spurs are reportedly targeting Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo in January as Ange Postecoglou looks to solve the club’s inconsistency woes.
Tottenham’s inconsistent start and league struggles
Tottenham’s season has been a tale of highs and lows, with impressive victories often followed by disappointing setbacks. Despite notable wins such as their Carabao Cup triumph over Manchester City and a 4-1 drubbing of Aston Villa, Spurs have struggled to build momentum.
A 3-2 Europa League defeat to Galatasaray and a 2-1 home loss to newly promoted Ipswich Town have exposed the team’s inconsistency. The results have left them in a disappointing 10th place in the Premier League after 12 matches, with just 16 points. Spurs have won five, lost five, and drawn one, sitting three points adrift of the top four.
Manager Ange Postecoglou has taken responsibility for the erratic form, admitting: “That’s my responsibility. The inconsistency we’re having this year ultimately comes down to me and my approach.” While Postecoglou retains the board’s backing, results will need to improve to maintain their confidence in his leadership.
Tottenham targeting Kubo to address creative issues
With the January transfer window approaching, Fichajes are reporting that Tottenham are considering moves to strengthen their attack, and Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo has emerged as a priority target. According to their report, the Japan international is valued at £50 million due to his release clause and is also attracting interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, making competition for his signature fierce.
Kubo has impressed this season, scoring three goals in 13 appearances across all competitions. His standout campaign came in 2022/23 when he notched 18 goal contributions in 44 matches for Sociedad, evenly split between nine goals and nine assists. His creativity and goal threat could provide Tottenham with much-needed attacking consistency.
Zinedine Zidane, who worked with Kubo during his time at Real Madrid, previously praised the player’s potential, saying: “He’s a very interesting player, for the present and the future. I’m happy he’s doing well.”
Why Kubo could transform Tottenham’s attack
Kubo’s ability to play across multiple attacking roles and his creativity make him an ideal addition to Postecoglou’s system. Adding another creative midfielder who can step in when Maddison is struggling for form is a move that fans can get behind as Kubo brings in more depth to the Spurs midfield.
However, if Tottenham are to make a move, they must act decisively to trigger Kubo’s release clause and secure his services ahead of rival suitors like Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
