Where Tottenham rank in xP compared to other Premier League sides
Spurs fans may be surprised by where Tottenham Hotspur sit in the ‘expected points’ Premier League table after the first 11 games of the 2024/25 season.
Are Tottenham in a false position?
Tottenham sit in 10th place in the Premier League table heading into the international break, having lost five of their games so far.
While that makes for terrible reading, it is important to consider that Ange Postecoglou‘s men are just three points off third place at the moment and have the second-best goal difference in the top flight.
That shows how close the league has been this season, with all teams apart from Liverpool struggling for consistency so far.
Where do Tottenham sit in ‘expected points’ table?
The expected points table is calculated based on the xG for and xG against which teams accrue in each game.
It turns out that Spurs are doing exceedingly well when it comes to this metric, with only Liverpool, Fulham and Manchester City having more expected points than the North Londoners this season.
Considering Tottenham have more expected points than the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea suggests that the Lilywhites’ performances so far this season have actually been good.
Reason for optimism for Spurs fans
Tottenham’s results this season do not make for good reading and I can certainly understand why the fans are frustrated by the team’s lack of consistency.
However, the one thing that is clear is that Spurs’ underlying metrics this season have been encouraging.
That could be interpreted as evidence that progress is being made and that the results will turn around sooner rather than later, however, they must learn to kill off matches and shore up their defensive set pieces.
