Journalist reveals Tottenham’s stance of issues with underperforming players
The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are aware of why their performances have not been consistent, with the current squad having one major shortcoming.
Tottenham’s inconsistency under Ange Postecoglou
We have already seen plenty of times that when Spurs are at their best, they are few better teams in the Premier League, with the Lilywhites being irresistible when things click for them.
However, the one theme under Ange Postecoglou‘s tenure has been the side’s inconsistency, with Tottenham looking incapable of stringing really good performances together.
Some Spurs fans feel that the inconsistency stems from the high-risk approach that the side takes, but Pitt-Brooke suggests that there is a bigger issue at play.
Tottenham are aware of their shortcomings
The journalist has pointed out that the issue comes down to the players, with the Tottenham first-team squad full of players who blow hot and cold.
Pitt-Brooke remarked that even Spurs’ best players are not ones who can be relied upon to produce consistently, adding that the club are aware that this is an issue they need to address.
He said on The View From The Lane podcast: “I think there’s a big problem, which is that the players are so inconsistent. Even the good players are not capable of doing it week in, week out. And I know this is a problem which, they’re certainly aware of inside the club.
“All the guys who you need to be at their best week in, week out, they’re not really, you know, Son is not having a good season, I don’t think. Admittedly, he’s had injuries, obviously, I think he has credit in the bank for being so good for the last nine years, but he’s not having a good season.
“Romero is not having a good season. Maddison is so inconsistent, he’s no longer in the team. Kulusevski is the one who is having a good season, but, you know, he can’t win games all by himself every single week. And so I think overall, there are big, big questions about the consistency of the players.”
The current Spurs squad do not have proof of work
The current Tottenham squad is an extremely young one and while a lot of players have a high ceiling, we have not seen much evidence that they can deliver consistently.
We do not know if the likes of Destiny Udogie, Pape Matar Sarr, Brennan Johnson, and others can deliver week-in, week-out over the medium to long-term.
In fact, even someone like Cristian Romero has had just one outstanding season despite now being into his fourth campaign at the club.
