What Tottenham’s expectations of Ange Postecoglou are come the end of the season
After back-to-back losses, Ange Postecoglou’s job security as Tottenham Hotspur head coach has once again been the subject of some discussion.
Spurs fan sentiment is polarised after gutting Ipswich defeat
Tottenham Hotspur‘s loss to Ipswich was a perfect opportunity that slipped through the team’s fingers. All of the other Premier League results had lined up for Tottenham to be able to climb to third in the table. However, they could not find their rhythm and after a challenging trip to Galatasaray and significant injuries in key areas, were unable to circumvent the problems Ipswich presented them.
The 2-1 loss to Ipswich stung leaving fans online polarised with some staying full-heartedly committed to giving Postecoglou the time to bring Tottenham success, while others now fail to see the vision and are unable to stomach the disappointing bumps along the way.
However, fan opinion is not influencing the Tottenham board who have made their thoughts on the Spurs boss clear.
Ange Postecoglou’s job is safe, but the club’s target is set
According to sources via Football Insider, Postecoglou is not in danger of being sacked. It is believed that after a strong first season and a commitment to his approach, the Spurs boss has “credit in the bank”.
Although Postecoglou has spoken of his drive to ensure Tottenham achieve trophy success this year and not letting their aspirations drop from that, there is a belief that the club’s expectation of the Australian is to secure a return to the Champions League.
This looks to be a tough battle for Tottenham this season with the race for Champions League places appearing more competitive than ever.
While Tottenham are currently in 10th in the Premier League table, their underlying numbers place them in and around a top four finish.
It will require Spurs finding a consistency with their performances which has so far eluded them, but it is a goal which is not yet out of reach.
Both Postecoglou and the club’s stance deserve appreciation
Postecoglou is right that Tottenham should not define themselves by qualifying for the Champions League as it is not a trophy. He is likely correct in that you foster the mentality of a top team by pursuing non-negotiable trophy success.
However, it is worth understanding that the finances and prestige earned from playing in Europe’s top competition, allow the club to facilitate Postecoglou’s vision.
The Spurs manager can insist that the mentality around a top four finish does not permeate the team, but that does not make the board’s expectation for that goal to be achieved in a second season to be completely unreasonable.
With the table currently so tight with so few points separating 3rd from 10th, patience and calmness that Spurs will find their way is reasonable. As long as the board are ready to reinforce the squad during the January transfer window, then there is still plenty of time for Postecoglou to meet their expectations.
