Eric Dier may face Spurs soon as three English clubs are interested
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender, Eric Dier, could be set for a return to England’s top flight, despite only recently signing for Bayern Munich.
Eric Dier’s mixed time at Tottenham
Eric Dier spent nearly 10 years at Tottenham, making 365 appearances for the club. The 30-year-old was a useful asset, when at his best, playing as a defensive midfielder, centre-back and even filling in at right-back on some occasions (Transfer Markt).
Dier became a popular figure at Spurs under Mauricio Pochettino, but he was spending fewer minutes on the pitch at the back end of the Argentine’s time in charge and did not start the Champions League, with Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks starting ahead of him.
But Dier kept his head up, breaking back into the first team under Jose Mourinho and iconically being named man of the match in a Carabao Cup win over Chelsea, despite having to dash off to the toilet during the game. And he continued to succeed, being recalled to the England squad in September 2022 as he impressed under Antonio Conte.
Although Dier was more recently frozen out at Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, he followed Harry Kane in signing for Bayern Munich, joining on loan at the start of the year, with the deal made permanent in the summer (GOAL).
Dier has been linked with a move back to the Premier League
Many Spurs supporters were confused by Bayern’s decision to sign Dier, a player past his prime, and it seems his days at the Bundesliga leaders are numbered, with the Englishman failing to start a league game this season.
And according to TBR Football, Dier could be set for a return to the Premier League, with Brighton and Hove Albion, Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers all considering a move for him.
Dier himself is hoping for a new contract and Bayern are happy with Dier’s professionalism and remain open to talks, but they cannot guarantee he will be given more minutes on the pitch. Vincent Kompany is seemingly less keen on the defender than previous manager Thomas Tuchel was.
With Dier’s contract running out next summer, he could be signed on the cheap in January, and a number of MLS clubs are also interested in the possibility of securing his services.
Dier can still do well in the Premier League
Dier has always had good leadership qualities and while he had periods of time when he struggled at Tottenham, he looked like he would make a great captain at a mid-table team.
When supporters had written him off, he kept fighting back and with 49 international caps, bags of Premier League experience and plenty of Champions League appearances, Dier can still do a job wherever he ends up.
