Hibs Women 1 Rangers 1

0 2

A valiant Hibernian performance at Meadowbank Stadium would see Grant Scott's side pegged back late on by Rangers.

Eilidh Adams dispatched from the penalty spot in the first half, before she had a second spot kick denied by Rangers 'keeper Jenna Fife in the second 45.

Rangers substitute Rio Hardy came on and snatched a point for the away side deep into stoppage-time, denying Hibs a noteworthy result against the league leaders.

The sole change from the side that defeated Spartans 4-0 last weekend saw Shannon Leishman make her first start of the season. The wing-back replaced Australian defender Stacey Papadopoulos, who missed out through illness.

Players from both sides warmed up wearing Show Racism the Red Card bibs pre-match to show their support in the fight of tackling racism within football.

From the off, Hibs started brightly. Michaela McAlonie and Tegan Bowie worked well done the wings to find Kirsty Morrison in the area following a bracing counter-attack. The winger stabbed the ball towards goal, forcing Fife into making an impressive point-blank save.

Adams’ rapid run behind the visitors' backline soon after was brought to a grinding halt by Rangers defender Kathryn Hill just as the striker teed herself up to test the Rangers number one again from close-range.

The Hibees were rewarded for their positive start when McAlonie was brought down in the area after a brilliantly worked free kick.

Adams stepped up to take the resulting penalty and dispatched low down the middle of the goal to put Hibs in front on 23 minutes.

The Hibs number nine has now found the net for the fourth game in a row, taking her tally to 15 for the season in just 12 appearances.

After the goal, Hibs needed to rally to rebuff multiple onslaughts from the away side. Katie Wilkinson was inches away from dragging Rangers back onto level terms, as her impressive effort from outside the area struck the post of Erin Clachers' goal.

Another heart in mouth moment succeeded Wilkinson's curler, as Rangers defender Hill then rattled the opposite post with a similar curling strike from range.

More fantastic work through the middle of the pitch from Hibs saw Ciara Grant and McAlonie link up brilliantly before the end of the first half, with a final effort proving too difficult for the latter to muster.

The Hibees took a slender one-goal lead into half-time and emerged for the second 45 to worsening blustery conditions.

As the wind continued to sweep across the Meadowbank turf, both sides contributed moments of minor turbulence.

Heading into the final 10 minutes, Hibs would find their second wind after withholding a barrage of Rangers attacks.

Morrison and substitute Rachael Boyle worked well to craft openings down the right flank, before Leah Eddie hauled down Morrison in the penalty area to gift Hibs a second penalty of the game.

The weather conditions disrupted the spot kick for a lengthy period, as the ball would not sit still on the spot, before Rangers shot-stopper Fife held her nerve to pull off a great save to deny Adams a second goal from twelve yards.

Rangers would find a late equaliser deep into stoppage-time as striker Rio Hardy pounced to earn her side a point. The substitute reacted quickest to Clachers' save from an unpredictable Wilkinson free-kick to slam in the leveller.

Another chance would fall to the visiting team as time wound down. Boyle was at hand to make a crucial block on a goal-bound close-range effort after a stramash occured in the Hibs penalty area.
