Increased autonomy

It has been well documented that Postecoglou gives plenty of autonomy to his staff when it comes to running training sessions.

The Australian likes to thoroughly brief his staff on what he expects of each training session, allowing his assistants to get the ideas across to the players in the manner they wish. However, Postecoglou himself prefers to keep a keen eye on proceedings from a distance.

Praise from Gold

Gold has now lavished praise on Matt Wells, suggesting that he is going to evolve into a top manager at some point in the future.

The 36-year-old joined Postecoglou’s coaching staff when the Australian arrived at the club last year and he was promoted to the role of assistant coach when Chris Davies left the club to become Birmingham City’s head coach in the summer.

Gold also named Stuart Lewis, who is in charge of Tottenham’s Under-18s, as one to watch out for.

The journalist said on The Last Word on Spurs: “I’d also add to the ones to watch, Matthew Wells. He’s going to be a terrific manager at some point, he’s going to go on to do something. Stuart Lewis who does the U18s as well, he’s another terrific up-and-coming coach as well.”

Academy coaches crucial

The Spurs hierarchy, including Johan Lange, have been pretty open about the fact that a lot of focus is now being put on acquiring and developing the best young talents in the Tottenham academy.

A big portion of that involves finding the right coaches for different age groups as a footballer’s tactical education from around 15 to 19 years of age is a crucial part of their development.

Based on Gold’s revelation, it sounds like the Spurs youngsters are in very good hands at the moment.
