The assist of the season

We will likely not see a better assist all season than the one Van de Ven produced at Old Trafford, with the Dutchman’s run leaving the Man Utd players in shock.

The defender won the ball deep in Tottenham’s own half and turned on the afterburners, managing to go past five or six United players before producing an inch-perfect low cross for Brennan Johnson to tap home.

The goal came in the third minute of the game and set the tempo for Spurs to dominate the game and come away with a thumping 3-0 win.

Van de Ven denies claim

On the back of that win, James Maddison shared a video of Van de Ven with his head buried in his phone, with the midfielder accusing the centre-back of watching his assist on repeat.

However, the Netherlands international has denied watching the run and cross over and over again, even if it is one of his highlights of the season so far.

When asked about that moment, he told Voetbal Nieuws: “I saw space in a flash. So, then you think: go. Yes, that goal was a highlight of course. But it’s not like I look back at those images endlessly.”

Reputation precedes him

Now that Van de Ven has already set up two goals this season with marauding runs from the back, opposition sides will be wary of getting too tight to him.

They will thus stand off the former Wolfsburg man, which would give him more time and space on the ball.
