Midfield congested

With Dejan Kulusevski thriving in the number eight role alongside James Maddison this season, it has made life difficult for some of Tottenham’s other midfielders.

As things stand, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr appear to be competing for one place in Ange Postecoglou’s starting eleven, with the Uruguayan being the preferred option in the number six role at the moment.

January addition?

Gold was asked if that is an area that Spurs should look to upgrade on in January and the journalist is confident that Archie Gray will be the first choice for that role over the long term.

However, the journalist did not rule out Spurs signing a defensive midfielder next summer to replace one of the senior players in that role.

When asked if a new number six should be on the club’s agenda, Gold said in a Q&A on Football.London: “In my view, Archie Gray is the long-term candidate for the role but I wouldn’t be surprised if Spurs bring in another option for the position in the meantime in the summer and one of the current incumbents moves on.”

Gray’s future uncertain

Gray’s talent is clear for all to see and one can understand why many view midfield as his long-term home. However, the youngster is extremely versatile and there is no doubt that he will continue being used across the backline over the next year or two.

Ange Postecoglou would certainly not rule out the possibility of Gray developing into a top-class centre-back or a full-back.
