Three Tottenham stars named in Premier League Team of the Season so far

0 1

Despite Spurs suffering one of their worst starts to a Premier League season in recent history, three Tottenham players have earned a spot in SofaScore’s team of the season so far.

Spurs have been inconsistent in the league so far

Despite recently piecing together an impressive hot streak of five straight victories, Tottenham have struggled to achieve consistent results in the Premier League, sitting ninth in the league after seven games.

Spurs have lost three of their previous five games in the league. Last time out, the Lilywhites suffered a devastating loss away to Brighton, despite taking a 2-0 lead. This put a stop to the momentum Postecoglou’s side were starting to build since their frustrating North London derby loss.

Postecoglou will now have the international break to mull over his team’s disappointing defeat and focus on correcting their mistakes ahead of a London derby against West Ham United on the 19th of October.

Three Spurs players feature in the team of the season so far

SofaScore have pieced together a team of the season so far based on their statistic-based ratings from the opening seven Premier League games – three Tottenham players made the cut.

Tottenham’s leading contributors for goals and assists in the Premier League, James Maddison and Heung-Min Son are both included with ratings of 7.64 and 7.88 respectively, completing a midfield of Saka, Palmer and Mateo Kovacic.

Spurs’ other inclusion is Cristian Romero, who joins Gvardiol and Van Dijk in defence with a rating of 7.4, despite the Argentine often finding himself as the man to blame for conceded goals. (Daily Mail)

Former players have criticised Romero’s start to the season

Despite his perhaps surprising inclusion in SofaScore’s team of the season so far, Cristian Romero has found himself the subject of criticism from both Paul Scoles and ex-Spurs star, Glenn Hoddle of late.

Both players slated the World Cup winner for his lapse of concentration for Brighton’s winning goal last Sunday, with Hoddle stating:

“If we just watch this, from an experienced defender, look at Romero here. Eyes on the ball. He’s not looked at (Welbeck). He has actually put himself in a poor position. He hasn’t opened his body up once.

“He has actually walked from a good position to get into a bad position, then he has just ball-watched. He is a spectator. He might as well be in Row Z watching from behind the goal. If you defend like that, then you are going to get punished.” (Premier League Productions 07/10/24 at 5:25 pm).”
