Match Preview: Annan Athletic vs Queen’s Park

0 1

When Queen’s Park meet Annan Athletic in the SPFL Trust Trophy on Friday night it will be the 40th game between the sides since the Galabank club became a Scottish Football League outfit in 2008.

The first meeting in this run was also in this competition, with the Black and Golds getting the better of the Black and Whites 2-0 back in July 2009. Since then, Queen’s have won 13 times, Annan on a further 18 occasions with seven games ending in a draw.

Seven of the Spiders wins were away from home, with their last success coming just over three years with a 2-1 League Cup success that saw goalkeeper Calum Ferrie make his debut.

A win at Annan would take Queen’s into the final eight for the second time in three years.

The season so far
Both Queen’s Park and Annan Athletic have played one tie in this season’s SPFL Trust Trophy with the Glasgow side defeating Edinburgh City 1-0 and the southern based team cruising past Stranraer 5-1.

In the Premier Sports Cup The Spiders reached the knock-out stages after wins over Peterhead, Elgin City and Kelty Hearts with Aberdeen ending hopes of a longer run with a late, late 1-0 success.

Annan also enjoyed a strong Premier Sports campaign with victories over Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Arbroath, a bonus point draw with Bonnyrigg Rose with their interest only ended when Dundee got the better of Willie Gibson’s side.
Queen’s head into the game on the back of a strong September that saw move into fourth place in the Championship following a home success over Morton, a draw with Ayr United and a 2-1 triumph at Dunfermline which was followed by positive start to October with last week’s success against Hamilton Accies.

Annan sit eighth in League 1 five points off leaders Kelty and four ahead of Dumbarton who sit bottom.

Wins were seen over Cove Rangers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the first two weeks of the league with a point picked up against Dumbarton before the first quarter of games finished with Annan enjoying seeing off visitors Montrose 1-0 thanks to a long, long-distance goal from debutant Rhys Breen.
