Alasdair Gold is not happy with Postecoglou comment after Brighton defeat

After Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat against Brighton at the weekend, Ange Postecoglou spoke to the media rather candidly about how disappointed he was with the result and the performance, but one of his comments has left Alasdair Gold perplexed and frustrated.

Postecoglou needed to make a change

With Spurs 2-0 up at half-time, everyone expected the Lilywhites to push on and secure a comprehensive and crucial win against Brighton on Sunday evening.

However, after the restart, Tottenham were stunned by a rejuvenated Brighton performance that saw the Seagulls bag three goals in 20 minutes to turn the game on its head.

Ange Postecoglou didn’t make any substitutions until the 79th minute, when the game was already pretty much out of reach for Spurs. After the final whistle, the Spurs boss admitted he didn’t make a change sooner because his team didn’t deserve to win the game and he didn’t want them to be falsely rewarded.

Postecoglou says the wrong thing

The manner of the defeat has angered a lot of Tottenham fans, but Postecoglou’s comments in the press conference afterwards have left their mark on Alasdair Gold, who took to YouTube to vent his frustrations at the manager’s explanation for his substitutions.

Gold said: “I’m sorry that was just, for me, one of Postecoglou’s contrary moments that he does sometimes where he’ll just say something just to be like: ‘No, no, you haven’t figured me out’.

“The false reward thing… say that to the players after if you want, if they still win it, say to them, you know, ‘You didn’t deserve that. That’s got to be so much better next time.’ That’s fine, but don’t come out and claim like it wouldn’t really make any difference making subs, because ultimately, we didn’t deserve to win the game. No, change the game, win it and then fix the problems after.

“I just feel like that one was one that was tinged with a bit of emotion. Too much emotion for a guy that normally thinks about what he says. But that was one I wasn’t a massive fan of.”

Big improvements needed

We now have the international break to have a bit of a reset, in terms of the mood and the reaction to that result. But at the end of the day, we can forget it and move on, but behind the scenes, work needs to be done to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Postecoglou needs to be more proactive, especially when he sees his team losing control of a game. I think the players definitely got overwhelmed by what Brighton brought to the game, and I personally believe Postecoglou was a bit lost, too, and he cannot afford to freeze like that again.
