Postecoglou takes responsibility

In his post-match press conference, Postecoglou admitted that the second-half display from Spurs was unacceptable, pointing out that the side lacked any real intensity or belief in their play (Football.London).

The 59-year-old labelled it ‘the most disappointing loss’ he has had in his Tottenham tenure, while adding that he has never seen the players do what they did in the second half before.

The Tottenham head coach did, however, take responsibility for the loss and insisted that it is up to him to ensure it does not happen again.

Hutchinson says Ange is to blame

Hutchinson says the Australian’s tactics cost Tottenham, accusing Postecoglou of not wanting his team to manage situations due to his arrogance.

The former Everton midfielder told Optus Sport: “It’s either they haven’t got a manager who wants to have in-game management because he’s so obsessed with scoring goals and being so much better since [Antonio] Conte and [Jose] Mourinho to watch or the players on the pitch are not disciplined.

“Romero and Van de Ven, two really good defenders, why at 2-1 are they not pulling in Udogie at left back and Porro at right back and saying ‘we know how this game is going, we’ve lost momentum, stay in your positions’. Get a grip of the game again and go from there.

“With Tottenham, there’s no in-game management. It’s either everyone score and we’ll score six or we’ll be all over the place and make it chaos. Think on your feet!”

Not a new phenomenon

Hutchison’s point would be legitimate if Tottenham had actually been good at managing games under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

However, the reality is that the side kept throwing away leads under those regimes and were also unable to control matches.

In fact, the general complaint from pundits and fans at the time was that sitting back after taking the lead and trying to ‘manage the game’ is a bad idea as it invites pressure.
