Robbie Keane is pleased that Spurs player has proved him wrong

Robbie Keane was concerned about one aspect of Dominic Solanke’s play when Tottenham signed him but admitted that his fears turned out to be misplaced.

Solanke’s impressive start

Solanke has hit the ground running since his move to Tottenham, having quickly adapted to Ange Postecoglou’s system.

The 26-year-old has led the line impressively, looking like a player who has already been at the club for over a year.

While the Englishman is now being praised for scoring three goals in his last four games, the most impressive parts of his game have been his interplay outside the box and his tireless pressing out of possession.

Keane’s admission

Keane confessed that while he always thought Solanke was a good signing, he did feel like Tottenham had overpaid for him.

The former Spurs man revealed that he was worried about the 26-year-old’s tendency to drift wide at Bournemouth but pointed out that the striker has not done that at his new club.

Keane said about Solanke on Its Called Soccer podcast: “Physically, he’s got everything. He is quick, he is good in the air. The fee was massive. Too much. [Solanke should have cost] £30m, maybe. But, this day and age, who do you get [in terms of] a proven goalscorer in the Premier League? I thought it was a good signing.

“When I watched him at Bournemouth, he always drifted to the left a lot, almost like Richarlison does. And that was my only concern. When you’re at Tottenham, you’ve got the [James] Maddisons, you’ve got [Heung-Min] Son, players who can create for you so you don’t need to be in wide areas.

“If he is going to be a success at Tottenham, you have to stay in the 18-yard box, between the posts. And you see his goals; tap-ins. He will score good goals outside the box [with] individual skill, no problem. But stay in the box. And he is doing that.”

Growing in confidence

Solanke appears to be growing in confidence with each game and his latest performances would serve as confirmation for the striker that he does belong at the highest level.

His first call-up to the England squad for seven years would only further add to the centre-forward’s belief, and Postecoglou will be hoping that he can outdo his goal tally at Bournemouth last season.
