Defensively brilliant from Vuskovic

His temporary team may not have been able to turn their dominance into a victory on Friday night against Beerschot, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw, but Vuskovic has stolen all the headlines for his input.

The young Croatian scored both goals for Westerlo, taking his tally to four goals and one assist for the season — not bad for a 17-year-old centre-half.

His form this year has got Spurs fans excited for when he finally arrives in North London next summer, and it seems the future is bright for Vuskovic.

As per data from Fotmob, the brilliance of his latest outing is clear to see in the statistics, and gives credence to the idea that Vuskovic could be a valuable addition to Ange Postecoglou‘s squad.

While the brace will naturally get attention, it’s important to recognise that Vuskovic put in a solid display at the back, too. He won both of his two tackles in the game, made two clearances, one interception, and a huge seven ball recoveries.

The youngster also won nine of his ten duels, including all seven of his aerial duels. Vuskovic did not commit a single foul on the night.

A threat going forward

Vuskovic got his two goals from a total of seven shots throughout the game (with an accuracy of 57%), which is incredibly high for a defender, so it’s clear he’s getting himself in dangerous areas. His xG amounted to just 0.72, meaning he exceeded expectations by quite some distance.

He had 101 touches in the 90 minutes, 12 of which were in the opposition box. In terms of passing, Vuskovic registered 20 passes into the final third, and eight of his 11 long balls were accurate, too.

Overall, he came out with a rating of 9.3 out of 10, the highest of anyone on the pitch.

When will Vuskovic be ready for Spurs?

Vuskovic can join Tottenham officially in 2025, but it is not yet known whether the young defender will jump straight into Postecoglou’s plans or if he will need more time.

The likelihood is that the Croatian will be sent out on loan again next season, probably to one of Europe’s top five leagues, to gain even more top-level experience. Postecoglou is more likely to integrate Ashley Phillips into his first-team squad next season as a priority, before allowing Vuskovic into the fold soon after.
