Match Report: AFC Fylde 5-2 Aldershot Town

Five star Fylde cruised to victory thanks to Nick Haugton’s wonder strike and braces from Gavin Massey and Charlie Jolley, despite a first-half fight back attempt from Aldershot.

Josh Barrett got things underway for the visitors moments before creating the first opportunity of the game as he fizzed a ball into the area with just under 60 seconds on the clock.

Less than a minute later Charlie Jolley almost opened the scoring when he saw his effort saved onto, and eventually over, the bar following a well worked move down the right hand side.

The Coasters saw off several Aldershot attacks just before the 20-minute mark as Theo Widdrington saw his effort from range blocked, prior to Barrett’s cross from the left hand side surpassing everyone in the area and eventually going behind for a goal kick. 

Nathan Delfouneso’s side then endured a sustained period of possession that led to the deadlock being broken.

Haughton opened the scoring in unbelievable fashion when he spotted Van Stappershoef off his line before lobbing him from the halfway line, extending his lead at the top of the National League scoring charts with a remarkable strike just past the 25th minute mark.

Less than five minutes later Jolley doubled the lead when Haughton picked him out from the right hand side, as he found space just outside the area before unleashing a powerful effort across goal and into the side netting.

It wasn’t long before Fylde fired home for a third time.

Gavin Massey slotted home from close range on the back of another brilliant move down the right flank.

Josh Barrett provided Tommy Widdrington’s side with an instant response when he found the back of the net with just five left to go in the first 45.

The visitors halved the deficit in the dying embers of the first-half when James Henry found himself one on one with Theo Richardson before slotting home, bringing an action packed first-half to an end.

The Coasters began the second-half on the front foot as Bryce Hosannah saw his teasing ball into the middle redirected behind for a corner prior to Haughton’s effort from just outside the area being saved by Van Stappershoef moments later.

It wasn’t long before Massey hit home his second of the afternoon as he cut in from the left hand side and nipped past an Aldershot defender before finding the bottom right corner from outside the area.

The scoring didn’t end there as Charlie Jolley slotted home his side’s fifth, and his second, of the game in the 65th minute, following a worked one-two between the number seven and Haughton that led to him shaking off his marker and striking hard and low into the bottom left corner.

The foot remained firmly on the gas for Fylde as Massey almost found an opportunity to claim the match ball following Owen Evans ball into the middle, moments before Haughton saw a strike tipped over the bar.

Patrick Gamble’s double denial when challenging Kai Corbett and then blocking his strike with a matter of minutes left, put an end to any form of goalscoring opportunities for the Shots.

A first win since mid-September for the Coasters, who will look to build on an emphatic display as they welcome Rochdale to Mill farm next weekend in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.
