Bruins’ Jim Montgomery Reveals Troubling Matthew Poitras Update

Head coach Jim Montgomery revealed a troubling update on a Bruins forward who fans hoped would have a breakout season.

Montgomery opened his Thursday news conference by stating Matthew Poitras was day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. The 20-year-old didn't play in Boston's 4-1 preseason win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, and he'll be out of the lineup for Thursday's exhibition matchup against the Los Angeles Kings in Quebec City.

Brad Marchand exited Tuesday's preseason win early due to an illness, and he'll also be out of the lineup Thursday. However, Montgomery noted the team was just being precautionary with the Bruins captain.

When asked if Fabian Lysell's recall from Providence was for Poitras or Marchand, Montgomery said it was always the plan to bring the prospect back in after he was cut from the training camp roster. Montgomery also hinted that more Providence players would be recalled for Saturday's preseason finale, which likely means more starters would get the night off before the regular-season opener next Tuesday.

Poitras played well in the preseason and seemed like a lock to make the Opening Night roster, which was a stated goal of his in training camp. The rising forward scored one goal in three games, and he also had five shots on goal.
