Spurs stuck to the game plan

Many had expected Spurs to comfortably beat Qarabag in their Europa League opener on Thursday night, and on paper the 3-0 scoreline does suggest a straightforward win for the Lilywhites.

However, the game was far from simple, especially given Spurs were down to 10-men after just seven minutes when Radu Dragusin was sent off for a clumsy professional foul.

After a few tactical adjustments, Tottenham took control of the game thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson, Pape Matar Sarr, and Dominic Solanke.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Solanke discussed the game plan Spurs worked towards to ensure the match went their way regardless of the circumstances.

He said: “Very happy to get the win, the boys fought hard. Going down to 10 men it could have been a difficult game, but we all stuck to the game plan and it shows the spirit of the team.”

This all came after the game’s kick-off was delayed due to Qarabag arriving at the stadium late, which also didn’t help the preparation for Spurs.

On this, Solanke added: “It was quite difficult to be fair. We prepped for a 20:00 kick-off, but we stayed ready. We could’ve had a better start, but we grew into the game.”

Solanke promises he can get better

Solanke registered his first goal for Spurs against Brentford last weekend, and has now doubled his tally with the strike against Qarabag.

Having just come back from injury, it seems Solanke still has more levels to reach as the season goes on, and he added, “I can still get fitter. I had that injury at the start of the season which knocked my rhythm.”

Things are looking good for Spurs

After a stuttering start to the season, results-wise at least, Spurs now appear to be back on track and looking pretty impressive. The system Postecoglou has implemented might not always get the win, but the work rate of the players and the mentality they are displaying right now has us set up for success.

It says it all that we were down to 10-men, the players stayed calm and did what was expected of them. We appear to be more resilient this season, and are much more capable of controlling games; if we can just keep taking our chances, we will have a great season.
