Tottenham set sights on European glory

Spurs will begin their Europa League campaign with a clash against Qarabag this evening and the two-time winners of the competition will be setting their sights on going all the way in the tournament.

While Tottenham would have ideally wanted to be in the Champions League, they undoubtedly have a much better chance of glory in Europe’s second-tier competition, going into it as one of the favourites.

However, the challenge for Ange Postecoglou would be in managing his squad, with fixtures set to pile up over the next couple of months.

Vicario is happy to be in Europe

However, Vicario insists that the extra fixtures come with the territory of playing for a big club like Tottenham, insisting that the club belong in Europe.

Ahead of the club’s opening Europa League game, the goalkeeper told Sky Italia (as relayed by Gianluca Di Marzio): “We like to play every three days, that’s what we wanted. Last season, we were without Europe and for a club like ours it was difficult in terms of ambitions.

“Away games take away a lot of energy, you have to be good at recovering mentally and be ready to get back into the game right away.

“We are a big club, it’s normal that we play to win matches. Getting into the top eight in the Premier League is an objective, even if it’s difficult because there are so many strong teams to face, so it will be a sporting battle.”

Squad rotation expected from Postecoglou

With Tottenham also in Premier League and Carabao Cup action over the coming weeks, Postecoglou will want to rotate his troops to ensure that his key players stay fresh.

The Spurs head coach will want to avoid a repeat of last season when several of his key players picked up injuries around November.
