Veliz’s bright start at Espanyol

Veliz has made a promising start to his time at Espanyol, having got off the mark in front of goal and having a key role so far for the newly promoted side.

In stark contrast to his spell on loan from Tottenham at Sevilla last season, the youngster appears to be central to the plans of manager Manolo Gonzalez.

The 20-year-old will be hoping to establish himself as a fixture in the starting eleven and catch the eye of Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff.

Outing to forget

Veliz had an extremely tough day at the office on Saturday, as Espanyol suffered a 4-1 defeat the Santiago Bernabeu.

After starting the club’s last five matches, the Argentine had to make do with a place on the bench in the Spanish capital before coming on as a substitute during the interval.

The game was finely poised at 0-0 when Veliz came on and it was actually the Catalan side that took the lead against the run of play, owing to an own goal by Thibaut Courtois.

However, that kicked Madrid into life, with the home side then managing to score without response to ease to a comfortable win.

Veliz feeding on scraps

According to Football.London, the centre-forward only touched the ball 14 times against Madrid, making one key pass and winning two aerial duels.

The striker had to chase lost causes during his 45 minutes on the pitch and had very little service to feed on.

This is something that Veliz might have to get used to this season, with Espanyol expected to be involved in a fight for safety.
